Use of cookies and trackers

A cookie is a small piece of data (text file) that a website – when visited by a user – asks your browser to store on your device in order to remember information about you, such as your language preference or login information.

Those cookies are set by us and called first-party cookies. We also use third-party cookies – which are cookies from a domain different than the domain of the website you are visiting – for our advertising and marketing efforts. More specifically, we use cookies and other tracking technologies for the following purposes (the cookies used by AFP are not identical on each of the Platform's websites - those listed below are those of the website you are currently viewing).

We also use tracking pixels in the emails we send you; these trackers fall under the same legal framework (Article 82 of the French Data Protection Act) and are described below.

Performance Cookies

These cookies allow us to count visits and traffic sources so we can measure and improve the performance of our site. They help us to know which pages are the most and least popular and see how visitors move around the site. All information these cookies collect is aggregated and therefore anonymous. If you do not allow these cookies we will not know when you have visited our site, and will not be able to monitor its performance.

Tracking pixels in our emails

What is a tracking pixel?

A tracking pixel is a very small, usually invisible image embedded in an email. It is displayed when the message is opened, like the activation of a click-tracking link, and constitutes a read operation on your device, subject to Article 82 of the French Data Protection Act, just like the cookies on our website.

Purposes requiring your consent

With your consent, Agence France-Presse (AFP) and its service providers use these trackers to determine whether you open our emails, when you do so, and which links you view, as well as to gather information about the device used. This allows us to measure and optimise the performance of our campaigns, personalise content, and adjust the frequency or channel of our communications.

Trackers exempt from consent

Certain trackers are used without your consent because they are strictly necessary: deliverability measurement strictly limited to the management of our lists (identifying inactive addresses, adjusting frequency, and automatically unsubscribing inactive users while retaining only the date of the last time an email was opened); security and authentication trackers; and links for unsubscribing and registering your preferences.

Withdrawal and objection

You may withdraw your consent or object at any time, just as easily as you gave it, via the link in the footer of every email or through our preference centre, without having to re-enter your address. You will continue to receive our emails, but your opens and clicks will no longer be recorded.

Scope

This consent mechanism applies to recipients located in the European Economic Area.

Data controller, recipients and retention periods

This data is processed by Agence France-Presse (AFP), the data controller, and by its service providers acting on its behalf. It is retained for 6 months; proof of your consent is retained for 6 months. This system is implemented in accordance with the recommendation of the CNIL (France's data protection authority) of 12 March 2026.
